For a hanging ornament, aim for a finished size of about 3 to 4 inches. In the pattern maker, choose the Circle (hoop) shape and set the size to 45–55 stitches — then stitch it on 18-count Aida for a dainty ornament, or 14-count if you'd rather have bigger holes and a slightly larger piece.
Fewer colors make a small portrait read better: at ornament size, 12 to 16 colors is plenty. If the preview looks busy, lower Colors in the Advanced settings.
Short names fit best on ornaments — up to about 8 letters in the classic font at this size. The wreath border is made for Christmas; hearts work for a first Christmas together. You can add the year as a second line, like "Christmas 2026".
A small ornament usually takes 15 to 25 hours. At four or five hours a week, start by mid-November to have it on the tree comfortably — or make it an early-January project for next year's first ornament.
About 3 to 4 inches across. That's roughly 50 to 60 stitches on 18-count Aida, or 45 stitches on 14-count.
