Screen colors are approximations of real threads — monitors and dye lots vary, so compare skeins in person for close calls. Color data: craft-color-codes by MakeBead (CC BY 4.0). DMC is a trademark of its owner; we're not affiliated.
How DMC numbers work
DMC numbers aren't in color order. 310 is black, 3865 is a soft "winter white", and the 2017 additions run from 01 to 35. A few threads have names instead of numbers:
| Thread | What it is |
|---|---|
| Blanc | DMC's standard bright white |
| B5200 | "Snow white" — even brighter than Blanc, slightly blue |
| Ecru | A warm off-white, like unbleached cotton |
| 3865 | Winter white — a soft, creamy white that's kinder than Blanc for pet fur |
That's why searching by color is easier than scrolling the numbers: switch the chart to By color to see neutrals together, then each color family from light to dark.
How the color finder matches
We convert your color and every DMC thread into CIELAB, a color space built around how people see, and compare them with CIEDE2000 (ΔE). As a rough guide:
- ΔE under 2: most people can't tell them apart.
- 2 to 5: noticeable side by side, fine in a pattern.
- Over 10: clearly different — DMC has no really close thread for that color.
Our pattern maker uses exactly the same matching for every color in your pet's pattern.
Why screen colors are approximate
Each swatch is a published approximation of the real thread. Your screen, its brightness and the light in your room all shift what you see, and dye lots vary a little. For a few important colors — your dog's coat, your cat's eyes — compare skeins in the shop in daylight.
Choosing threads for pet fur
- Black fur looks flat in 310 alone. Mix in 3371 (black brown) or a dark gray like 413 for the shine.
- White fur needs a few cool and warm shades — B5200 or Blanc for highlights, 3865 and a pale gray like 762 for shadows — or it disappears into white fabric.
- Golden and red coats usually span four to six browns and golds; the color finder on a photo pixel is the quickest way to find them.
Questions
How many colors does DMC make?
DMC's standard six-strand embroidery floss comes in about 500 solid colors. This chart lists the 489 in our color table, including the newer 01–35 range.
What's the difference between DMC Blanc, B5200 and 3865?
Blanc is DMC's standard white. B5200 (snow white) is brighter, with a slightly blue cast. 3865 (winter white) is a soft, creamy white that blends well in fur and against off-white fabric.
Is DMC 310 the darkest color?
Yes, 310 is DMC's black. For fur and shadows, 3371 (black brown) and 939 (very dark navy) are softer darks that often look more natural next to 310.
Can I find the DMC color for a hex code?
Yes. Type the hex code into the color finder above and it lists the five closest DMC threads, with how close each one is.
