Hoop: the smallest standard hoop whose inside diameter clears the design's diagonal with a little room. Frame: the smallest standard frame with at least ¾ in of fabric around the design.
The formula
Finished size = stitches ÷ fabric count. A count is the number of stitches per inch, so 100 stitches on 14-count Aida are 100 ÷ 14 = 7.1 inches.
Evenweave and linen are usually stitched over two threads, which halves the count: 28-count linen over two gives 14 stitches per inch — the same size as 14-count Aida.
| Fabric | Stitches per inch | 100 stitches is |
|---|---|---|
| 11-count Aida | 11 | 9.1 in (23.1 cm) |
| 14-count Aida | 14 | 7.1 in (18.1 cm) |
| 16-count Aida | 16 | 6.3 in (15.9 cm) |
| 18-count Aida | 18 | 5.6 in (14.1 cm) |
| 28-count evenweave, over two | 14 | 7.1 in (18.1 cm) |
| 32-count linen, over two | 16 | 6.3 in (15.9 cm) |
How much extra fabric?
Add 3 inches on every side for a framed piece — enough to hold it in a hoop while you stitch and to lace or tape it into a frame. For a small ornament, 2 inches is plenty. Cut a little more rather than less: you can't add fabric later.
Which fabric count should I choose?
- 14-count Aida is the classic choice and the easiest for a first pet portrait.
- 16 or 18-count makes the same pattern smaller and finer — good for detailed portraits you want to keep compact.
- 11-count has big, easy-to-see holes but makes everything larger.
Our patterns show the finished size on the fabric you pick before you buy, so you can try sizes until it fits the frame you have in mind.
Questions
What size Aida do I need for a 100 × 100 pattern?
On 14-count Aida it stitches up to 7.1 × 7.1 inches. With 3 inches spare on every side, cut a piece about 13 × 13 inches — a standard 18 × 21 inch fat quarter is enough.
Is 28-count evenweave the same as 14-count Aida?
When you stitch over two threads, yes: both give 14 stitches per inch, so the finished size is the same. Evenweave just looks finer and takes a little more practice.
How do I fit a pattern in a hoop?
For a round hoop display, the whole design has to fit inside the circle, so its diagonal matters, not just its width. The calculator picks the smallest standard hoop that clears the diagonal with a little room.
