Full crosses only. Backstitch, French knots and starting a new color add a little more.

How fast do people stitch?

Most stitchers make between 100 and 200 full cross stitches an hour once they're settled into a section of one color. Beginners and anyone stitching on 18-count or finer fabric are often nearer 80. Your own number is easy to find: stitch for half an hour with a timer and count.

What slows you down isn't the stitching itself but everything around it:

  • Color changes. Every new color means threading, starting and finishing. A 40-color pattern takes noticeably longer than a 15-color one with the same number of stitches.
  • Scattered single stitches ("confetti"). Photo-realistic charts can be full of them. Each one is a tiny start and stop.
  • Backstitch and specialty stitches add time on top of the full crosses.

The ranges reflect color count and how much confetti the chart has. Our pattern maker keeps confetti down on purpose — and shows a time estimate for your exact pattern before you buy.

Ways to finish sooner

  • Choose fewer colors and a slightly smaller size — the biggest single saving.
  • Stitch one color across a whole 10 × 10 block before switching ("cross-country" or "parking" methods).
  • Good light and a chart you can mark off (on paper or in a chart-tracking app) cut the time spent finding your place.

Questions

How long does a 100 × 100 cross-stitch take?

A 100 × 100 pattern with most of the area stitched has around 8,000 to 10,000 stitches — roughly 55 to 90 hours at an average pace, depending on how many colors and scattered stitches it has.

How many cross stitches can you do in an hour?

Typically 100 to 200 full stitches in a block of one color. Patterns with lots of color changes or single scattered stitches bring the average down.

How long do pet portrait patterns take?

A small ornament-sized pet is a few weekends; a framed portrait is usually 40 to 100 hours. Each pattern from our pattern maker shows an estimate for its exact size and colors.
